 (OTC Mid-50's)
"My Friend George R. Shimmons served on the ship as a radarman leaving as a RD2 in 1952, he later went to school and through the OTC was commissioned. He made Ltjg if not Lt, got married, living the good life but was killed in a car accident around 1976. It is hard to believe but I have no pictures when he was on the Spangler yet we chummed around all the time. I would guess he was born in 1929 as he made 21 before me and was slender in build. We we went in beer joints before I was 21, I would let Shimmons go in first and after they checked his ID, ofte times Ellis could get right in...well it worked sometimes. We kept close contact over the years with him visiting me in Indiana and later in California. In 1962-3 he was the gunnery Officer on the USS Ticonderoga the ship was sent to Japan or someplace for eight months, George had this new Pontiac convertible and didn't want to store it for such a long time. After he twisted my arm of severe pain I agreed to keep and drive his new toy while he was away. I never did meet or know his wife. He was from Huey, Pennsylvania." -- Submitted by his shipmate and friend, Bob Ellis, SO2 (1949 - 1952).
