LCDR. Robert R. Carter (1959-1951)

LCDR Carter served aboard the USS Spangler from 1949 to 1951, relieving LCDR Rizza as Commanding Officer in late 1949. Bob Ellis reports that LCDR Carter, who was relieved by LCDR L.G. Pollock in 1951, was CO when the Spangler won the Navy "E" in 1950, that he was a favorite among the crew.

Captain Carter was was lost at sea on 11 August 1965 while serving as Commodore, Commander Destroyer Squadron 20 aboard the Flagship USS Newman K. Perry (DD883). This was during an accident when the Newman K. Perry struck the starboard side of the USS Shangri-La CVS-38 while enroute to the Mederteranian for operation with the 6th fleet.

A newsletter from the USS Newman K. Perry published on 15 August 1965 reported that, "In spite of our search efforts assisted by the Coast Guard and Navy aircraft we were not able to recover him. Captain Carter was an outstanding naval officer who served his country gallantly for more than twenty three years. He suffered wounds during World War II and wore the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for bravery in action."

Captain Carter served the prior two years as commander of the Naval Destroyer School at Newport and at the time of the accident had only been aboard the Newman K. Perry since August 3rd, just a little over a month.

Remembered by Bob Ellis.
