Albert optimized professionalism in every aspect of his duties. You could see it in the way his crew responded to him and in respectful manner in which officers sought his suggestions. The man knew his stuff!!! He was a mentor and outstanding teacher to his quartermaster and signalman gang. Art served with the Canadian Navy before coming on board with the U.S. Navy, and at the time made his home in Garner, Mass. He stepped aboard the Spangler in Sept 1955 and remained until the ship was decommissioned in Oct. 1958. He and his wife Helena had eight children then and I understand they had two more after he departed from the Spangler. He stayed on in the navy to become Quartermaster Chief. Then on retiring he entered the Merchant Marines, where he rose to rank of 1st Mate and eventually skippered his own ship from the east coast to the west coast where it operated as Oceanographic Research Vessel. Art resided in Sun City, CA when he passed away a few years back.- Submitted by his shipmates, Gene Lund and Wayne Dorough.
